I'm still looking forward to hearing what you have to say about the thirteen middos; havana or pe'ulah.

  3. Thanks for reminding me. I have been a little sluggish lately. B'N after pessach I will try to tackle the issue. Many students of the Rambam hold that it is havana though I disagree.

Why is it that at the seder we say
    בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵינוּ מֶלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם, אֲשֶׁר גְּאָלָנוּ וְגָאַל אֶת אֲבוֹתֵינוּ מִמִּצְרַיִם, but in the tfilla it is z'man cherutaynu?

the question i understand is why we don"t say zman geulateinu instead of cheiruteinu in tefilla.

i think that chag pessach includes kryat yam suf and even possibly until shavuot and matan tora. if i remember correctly that is how long there is tashlumim for korbanot. geulat mitzraim was only one part of total cheirut and that is the focus of the seder and hagadah. the chag itself is broader and commemorates our complete liberation.

  7. Dear DG,

    Moadim lesimcha!

    When we say אֲשֶׁר גְּאָלָנוּ וְגָאַל אֶת אֲבוֹתֵינוּ מִמִּצְרַיִם
in the past tense in the Hagada- what exact event are we pointing to?

It is a little funny that we recognize geula in the sippur as an event that occurred, yet have no chag which incorporates this most important event in its Kedushat hayom and tefilla. Isnt this strange?

geula is only one component of Cherut which is the ultimate and entire chag.the chag itself commemorates the result of the ness which is cherut. We reprocess the result by rememebering each component, geula, kryat yam suf and kabalat hatorah which together brought about our freedom.

  9. Interesting -I was thinking the exact opposite- חירות as an incomplete component of גאולה.

We see for example that גאולה continues toward completeness at the time of Mashiach. There is no counterpart of completeness of חירות is there?

For me חירות is political independence, a rejection of tyranny and a yearning for a constitutional leadership that is a potential for education.ויאמנו בה ובמשה עבדו)

גאולה is the becoming or the realizing of education in the complete human society.

What is your sense of these terms?

  10. geulah is a removal of a negative while I see cherut as the positive and therefore the goal.Moshiach will be first geula but only then can there be cherut. Cherut can be seen as a long drawn out line where there are different levels of cherut. there is incomplete cherut both personal(ein ben chorin keosek batorah) and national (bayit Sheni).

I however see where you are going and I think where you see geulah I see cherut.
