An Existential Threat?

A very scary article.

http://www.economist.com/world/na/displayStory.cfm?story_id=8861497&fsrc=nwlgafree

17 Thy children make haste; thy destroyers and they that made thee waste shall go forth from thee. (Yeshayahu 49:17).

My first reaction was my usual revulsion at the small group of "Orthodox Jews in beards, side-curls and heavy black coats - holding up signs saying “Stop AIPAC”, “Torah forbids Jews dictating foreign policy”, and “Judaism rejects the state of Israel”." But when I finished the article my anxiety was heightened by serious fears about the perception of the Jews as the powerful "other", the insinuation that they were a strong force behind the Iraq fiasco and the intractable Palestinian "problem".

The likes of Georges Soros, the Reform liberals and other such groups play into the hand of our enemies. They come across as merely critical of current policy without offering constructive alternatives.

I don't know what the solution is. We need inspired leadership to help us deal with a potential existential problem for Klal Yisrael. We need a Shimon ben Shatach, a Rabbi Yehudah Hanassi or a Rabeinu Moshe ben Maimon, leaders who have integrated Torah with reality, to pull us out of this quagmire.

Must one believe that God created the World? Is it an Ikkar - Dogma?

In the Sinai Journal volume 137 year 69, there is an interesting article by Rav Aryeh Leib Feldman, where he cites comments of Rabbeinu Nissim of Gerona (Rabbi Nissim ben Reuven (1320 - 1380, Hebrew: נסים בן ראובן) also known as RaN, in his Pirush on Torah, in which he defends Rashi against Ramban’s criticisms. The first one addresses the famous first Rashi in Chumash that quotes R. Yitzchak as asking why the Torah starts with Breishit. After all it is a book of laws rather than a history or philosophical treatise. Ramban is surprised by the question. He argues that the Torah has to tell us that God created the world because that is the basis of all our beliefs and anyone that does not accept it is a heretic.

Before I explain Ran’s answer it is necessary to understand Rambam’s position on this as it is the underlying argument in Ran’s exposition. As I have discussed many times in earlier posts and in my two articles in Hakirah, Rambam holds that there is only one thing that can be proven empirically in Jewish theology; the existence of God as the First Cause. By definition, once that is proven, His uniqueness, perfection and omnipotence are self-evident conclusions. Everything else that we as Jews believe about God, are ontological explanations based on revelation, the Torah and other theological considerations. That God has Will and that He willed existence and the universe at a certain time are not self-evident axioms. They are accepted by us because they fit our understanding of what revelation has taught us. The reason I say fit rather than saying revelations teaches us, is because Nevuah is an interpretable medium. Its use of language is flexible enough to allow it to be adapted to a broad range of ideas. The rule that governs how far we can interpret is quite simple; as long as the revelatory statement cannot be overturned by empirical evidence, it stands as is.

The fact that God is the First Cause of everything, that everything depends on His existence while His existence is totally independent of anything else, can be proven empirically without the need for revelation. That statement alone already forces us to accept His uniqueness, His singularity and thus His unknowability. In other words He is transcendent and nothing about Him, except the effects He caused, can be known. Man from time immemorial, in his quest for answers to his existential questions, has engaged in a search for this great unknowable entity that we call God. Revelation, a natural human capability that we learned with time how to use, teaches us that certain beliefs, ontological explanations, are helpful in that quest. That God has Will is the most fundamental and sine qua non of all religious experience. What we are saying is that for us to understand the existence we observe, had we been the ones who caused it to exist; we would have had to have willed it. As will to us is time dependent, at one time we had not yet willed what we are willing now, so too we say that God willed existence other than His own at a certain time. As God is perfect by definition, He exercised His will only one time. That allows us to accept that everything we experience is the result of that one time primordial Will that God exercised. Rambam makes this point very clear in MN 2:25:

“Know that with a belief in the creation of the world in time, all the miracles become possible and the law becomes possible, and all questions that may be asked on this subject, vanish. Thus it might be said: Why did God give prophetic revelation to this one and not to that? Why did God give this law to this particular nation, and why did He not legislate to the other? Why did He legislate at this particular time, and why did He not legislate before it or after? Why did He impose these commandments and these prohibitions? Why did He privilege the prophet with the miracles mentioned in relation to him and not with some others? What was God’s aim in giving this law? Why did He not, if such was His purpose, put the accomplishment of the commandments and the non-transgression of the prohibitions into our nature? The answer to all these questions would be: He wanted it this way; or His wisdom required it this way. And just as He brought the world into existence having the form it has, when He wanted to, without us knowing His will with regard to this or in what wisdom there was in His particularizing the forms of the world and the time of its creation- in the same way we do not know His will or the exigency of His wisdom that caused all the matters, about which questions have been posed above, to be particularized.”

When I say that God has Will is not empirically provable, I am saying that as the First Cause, we can understand God as an entity that is the underlying “concept” of the universe. He and the universe (existence) have eternally been there and will be so eternally. The idea that there is a First Cause is not a temporal statement; it is an explanation of how things exist. They have existed that way eternally. This understanding negates all religious experience as there is no possible relationship with such a God. What relationship can one have with an entity that has no will?

The idea that God having Will is the basis for all Jewish theological discourse is accepted by all the Rishonim. Their arguments are in its application in our analyses of our existence. When reading Rashi’s question, Ramban’s reaction was that once we accept that God has Will does it not include the belief that He created the world in time? Isn’t the belief that God created the world in time a necessary and fundamental idea that underlies the whole Torah and the laws it promulgates? Is it therefore not self-evident why the Torah introduces the idea of Creation before it proceeds to giving laws?

RaN in his Pirush on the Torah, excerpted in the above article, argues that we could accept eternal existence, that God is not the Creator; He can be seen as the First Cause, as long as we accept that He has Will. It is not necessary to assume that because He has Will he must have created. Will and Creation are not synonymous. Although there cannot be Creation without Will, there can be Will without Creation. As long as the Torah teaches us that God has Will and exercises it, the whole Torah makes sense. Rashi’s question is therefore why did the Torah choose to tell us that God has Will by telling us that He is the Creator? Why did it not find it sufficient to tell us this important idea starting with the Exodus? Why is the ontological understanding of that event not enough for the belief that God has Will and exercises it? Why is the Mitzvah of Hachodesh Hazeh Lachem which resulted from that experience not enough to teach that God has Will and exercises it?[1]

RaN then makes a very important statement. The fact that God created the world is not a dogma that we must accept on its own. As long as we accept that God has Will, the rest of the Torah would stand without a problem. An eternal uncreated universe does not negate Will to God. It therefore cannot be a dogma without which Judaism cannot stand. However once the Torah tells us that God did create the world in time, denying it makes one deny a statement in the Torah. That in itself is heresy.

This discussion gives us an insight of how RaN saw the Ikkarim and I believe is how Rambam saw them. They are not arbitrary stand-alone dogma. They are what Rambam understood to be fundamental ideas without which the rest of Jewish theology and practice have no meaning. When later Rishonim such as RaN followed by his pupils R. Hasdai ben Abraham Crescas (Hebrew: חסדאי קרשקש) (born in Barcelona, Catalonia c. 1340 - 1410/1411) and R. Yosef Albo (15th century Spain) argued against the Ikkarim, they were arguing that Judaism can be understood rationally with a smaller number of dogma. In other words they tried to show that the Torah can stand on its own independently of certain dogma. They were not denying the validity of the beliefs nor the fact that someone who does not believe in them is stepping outside the boundaries of Jewish theology. They just argued that if one does not accept several of Rambam’s Ikkarim the rest of Judaism does not crumble.

[1] This argument has implication on how we understand miracles. Rambam who does not see God exercising His Will all the time, just at Creation, sees the Exodus as the result of that original Will at Creation. Ramban and His school of thought see God exercising Will constantly. But this is a lengthy discussion for another time.

How superstitious can one be?

Jewish Worker posted this

http://jewishworker.blogspot.com/2007/03/important-information-for-all-daf-yomi.html

It is mind boggling to me that people of the stature of R. Chaim Kanievsky lend their name to such nonsense. What can one expect from his followers?

Does Evil Exist?

Did God create everything that exists? Does evil exist? Did God create evil?

A University professor at a well-known institution of higher learning challenged his students with this question. "Did God create everything that exists?"

A student bravely replied, "Yes he did!"

"God created everything?" The professor asked.

"Yes sir, he certainly did," the student replied.

The professor answered, "If God created everything; then God created evil. And, since evil exists, & according to the principle that our works define who we are, then we can assume God is evil."

The student became quiet & did not respond to the professor's hypothetical definition. The professor, quite pleased with himself, boasted to the students that he had proven once more that the religious faith was a myth.

Another student raised his hand & said, "May I ask you a question, professor?"

"Of course," replied the professor.

The student stood up and asked, "Professor does cold exist?"

"What kind of question is this? Of course it exists. Have you never been cold?"

The other students snickered at the young man's question. The young man replied,

"In fact sir, cold does not exist. According to the laws of physics, what we consider cold is in reality the absence of heat.Everybody or object is susceptible to study when it has or transmitsenergy, & heat is what makes a body or matter have or transmit energy.Absolute zero (-460F) is the total absence of heat; & all matter becomes inert & incapable of reaction at that temperature. Cold does not exist. We have created this word to describe how we feel if we have no heat."

The student continued, "Professor, does darkness exist?"

The professor responded, "Of course it does."

The student replied, "Once again you are wrong sir, darkness does not exist either. Darkness is in reality the absence of light. Light we can study, but not darkness. In fact, we can use Newton's prism to break white light into many colors & study the various wavelengths of each color. You cannot measure darkness. A simple ray of light can break into a world of darkness & illuminate it. How can you know how dark a certain space is? You measure the amount of light present. Isn't this correct? Darkness is a term used by man to describe what happens when there is no light present."

Finally the young man asked the professor, "Sir, does evil exist?"

Now uncertain, the professor responded, "Of course, as I have already said. We see it everyday. It is in the daily examples of man's inhumanity to man. It is in the multitude of crime & violence everywhere in the world. These manifestations are nothing else but evil."

To this the student replied, "Evil does not exist, sir, or at least it does not exist unto itself. Evil is simply the absence of God.It is just like darkness & cold, a word
that man has created to describe the absence of God. God did not create evil. Evil is the result of what happens when man does not have God's love present in his heart. It's like the cold that comes when there is no heat, or the darkness that comes when there is no light."The professor sat down.

The young man's name--Albert Einstein. A true story.

I received this in an email. It sounds like an apocryphal Einstein story. I believe it is a good explanation of evil. It also explains well Rambam in MN3:10:

“Just as we say of him who puts out the light at night that he has produced darkness, so we say of him who destroyed the sight of any being that he produced blindness, although darkness and blindness are negative properties, and require no agent. In accordance with this view we explain the following passage of Isaiah: "I form the light and create (bore) darkness: I make peace, and create (bore) evil" (Isa. xlv. 7), for darkness and evil are non-existing things. Consider that the prophet does not say, I make (‘osseh) darkness, I make (‘osseh) evil, because darkness and evil are not things in positive existence to which the verb "to make" would apply; the verb Bara "he created" is used, because in Hebrew this verb is applied to non-existing things e.g., "In the beginning God created" (Bara), etc.; here the creation took place from nothing. Only in this sense can non-existence be said to be produced by a certain action of an agent.”

Holy Money, Holy Language and Holy Spirit- Shekel Hakodesh, Lashon Hakodesh and Ruach Hakodesh.

The past Shabbat we read the following:

13 This they shall give, every one that passes among them that are numbered, half a shekel after the shekel of the sanctuary--the shekel is twenty gerahs--half a shekel for an offering to the LORD.

The translator here correctly translates Shekel Hakodesh, Shekel of the Sanctuary rather than holy shekel. Ramban explains that Shekel Hakodesh refers to a special coin that was used in all kinds of transactions that dealt with Mitzvot related to the Beit Hamikdash. Ramban points out that similarly Lashon Hakodesh – Hebrew – should also be translated as the language used for holy matters. It is the language in which the Torah was given to us by God; it is also used for the names of HKBH and the angels.

However Rambam in MN 3:8 has what seems to be a different take. He explains that Hebrew is called the Holy Language because it does not have specific words for obscene matters. Anything that has to do with sexual matters is referred to with equivocal words, words that are used for other things generally and based on the context we infer that it talks about sexual matters.

“I have also a reason and cause for our language being called the holy language [lashon Hakodesh[1]]--do not think it is exaggeration or error on our part, it is perfectly correct--the Hebrew language has no special name for the organ of generation in females or in males, nor for the act of generation itself, nor for semen, nor for secretion. The Hebrew has no original expressions for these things, and only describes them in figurative language and by way of hints, as if to indicate thereby that these things should not be mentioned, and should therefore have no names; we ought to be silent about them, and when we are compelled to mention them, we must manage to employ for that purpose some suitable expressions, although these are generally used in a different sense. Thus the organ of generation in males is called in Hebrew gid, which is a figurative term, reminding of the words, "And thy neck is an iron sinew" (gid) (Isa. xlviii. 4). It is also called shupka, "pouring out" (Deut. xxiii. 2), on account of its function.”

Ramban quotes this Rambam and disagrees with him based on a technical point. He interprets two of the proof texts used as sexually explicit whereas Rambam read them as non-explicit. He does not question the obvious issue if there is intrinsic holiness in Hebrew should it not be called Lashon Kadosh rather than Lashon Hakodesh? Apparently Ramban understood Rambam as saying that because Hebrew is used for the purpose of teaching Torah and in the performance of Mitzvot such as Berachot, Shema etc… (I left out the Names of Hashem which Ramban adds but I believe Rambam would disagree – a matter to be discussed elsewhere), it does not contain words that explicitly describe the most physical of all activities – sex. The difference between Rambam and Ramban however is whether there is intrinsic holiness in a language. Ramban sees it as intrinsically holy because it is the language that God spoke in it to us. Although it may contain sexually explicit words it remains intrinsically holy, or as he puts it “Kodesh Kadashim” because of who used it[2]. Rambam holds that the people who speak it have chosen not to include sexually explicit language because its ultimate purpose is to communicate with each other loftier matters. It is specifically designed for the purpose of “Holy” matters.

Continuing in the same vein, Ruach Hakodesh should not be translated Holy Spirit but the spirit used for holy matters. The opposite is Ruach Hatume’ah which also would translate as spirit used for unclean matters as opposed to the one used for Holy matters. There is neither intrinsic Kedusha nor intrinsic Tume’ah according to Rambam. It is what we make of it. Just as Hebrew is designed to be used for Holy matters so too thoughts that result in the contemplation of physical and metaphysical concepts for the purpose of finding God are designated as Ruach Hakodesh.

There is an alternate way of understanding Ruach Hakodesh, as the thoughts that emanate from a Holy place, from the Beit Hamikdash. When Jews came to the Beit Hamikdash they focused their thoughts on contemplating God and His creations. Because the Beit Hamikdash was the catalyst for these thoughts, the central part of the Beit Hamikdash being the Kodesh, the Holy of Holies, they are referred to as emanating from the Kodesh.

Which brings us to what exactly does Kedusha and Tume’ah mean? Rambam at the end of Hilchot Mikva’ot discusses it as follows:

(Partial paraphrase)
It is clear that that Tume’ah and Taharah are regulated by the Torah and a person’s mind cannot define them; they therefore belong to the category of Chukim… For Tume’ah is not like dirt or feces that can be washed away by water; it is a biblical regulation [that mikvah cleanses] and it is dependent on the persons thoughts… so too someone who focuses his mind to cleanse his soul from the unclean which are evil thoughts and incorrect concepts. Once one has made up one’s mind to leave those bad ideas and teach oneself proper concepts – one immediately becomes clean – Tahor…

[1] This is written in Hebrew in the Arabic text. It is thus not a translation.
[2] Ramban sees it as intrinsically holy but it is not reflected in its appellation. Lashon Hakodesh is what it is called because of its uses.

A Monopoly on Truth

I came across this article in Ha’aretz which is quite interesting in itself though living in Galut I do not feel I am entitled to voice my opinion on such controversial issue.

http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/835467.html

However a quote by someone I consider one of the real Gedolei Torah, Rav Aharon Lichtenstein, caught my attention. I recall seeing a similar comment by the Rav in one of his writings though I cannot locate it now.

Nonetheless, he observes: "When people become more religiously observant, they are convinced they have a monopoly on the truth. Although they might care more passionately about certain issues, they are not particularly imbued with a sense of humility or self-criticism that is rooted in a full-fledged spiritual world. They are unprepared to hear what others have to say because they believe it might weaken their religious faith."

I could not have said it better.

Professor Aviezer, Skeptics,Evolution, Intelligent Design, "Out There" and Existence of God.

Professor Nathan Aviezer in the current Skeptic Magazine has an excellent article refuting an earlier article by Alexander Nussbaum which argued that Orthodox Jews do not accept evolution and other areas of science. The article titled Jews for Darwin goes on to show that evolution is compatible with Torah, demonstrates that Genesis and science are in harmony especially based on Rambam’s understanding of the six days of creation.

Addressing the theory of ID (Intelligent Design) he correctly relegates it to the area of religion arguing that it is not science. As I have argued many times in my posts ID per se does not prove the existence of God. We believe that God willed the world into existence, not as Aristotle thought that God as First Cause and the physical world was always interdependent, God having no choice in the matter. But proving that God exists based on the fact that the universe is too complex for it to have formed on its own and therefore must have had a Creator who set in place the complex and beautiful laws that govern it, is not a good argument. As Professor Aviezer points out, God’s creative activities are usually carried out within the framework of His own laws of nature. That these laws are God’s is a religious belief not science. As I have shown in my article in Hakirah volume 3 http://hakirah.org/Vol%203%20Guttmann.pdf (pages 217-220) God having will, creating the universe, miracles and reward and punishment are all ontological beliefs dictated by religion rather then by empirical proofs.

There is one point however on which I disagree with Professor Aviezer. Professor Aviezer argues that the “prime mover” proof for the Existence of God, in his words, the most famous proof of all, is no longer applicable after Newton’s discovery of gravity. It is true that we no longer believe that constant movement requires impetus and therefore there is no need anymore for a constant “mover” to keep things moving. However we still need to explain how there can be an infinite sequence of cause and effect, which is how the universe functions based on our observations, without there being a First Cause that caused everything without Himself being an effect of another cause. Professor Aviezer left the impression that once the Prime Mover proof is no longer valid we cannot empirically prove the existence of God. I understand Professor Aviezer’s concern that the “God of the gaps” as he puts it, may at some future time play a role in refuting even this argument, that some scientific theory will eventually explain naturalistically how all things are caused. He therefore prefers to relegate the argument for the existence of God to the religious arena rather than the empirical. I have faith that the existence of God will never nor can it ever be disproved. The argument made by Stephen Hawking and the consequences of that position regarding the existence of God as discussed in my post http://yediah.blogspot.com/2006/06/professor-stephen-hawking-and-rambam.html I believe will stand eternally.

On a related note there is a fascinating article in this week’s New York Times magazine titled “Out There” which talks about dark matter and dark energy, the problem in physics that is currently at the center of research. This article brings home that, although we infer that there is a force that we call gravity and we also infer that there is dark matter and dark energy that makes up 96% of the matter in the universe, all of these entities’ essence is totally unknown. We know they exist but not what they are. In a way we are back to where Rambam stood 800 years ago when he said in MN 2:24:

“What I said before (ch. xxii.) I will repeat now, namely, that the theory of Aristotle, in explaining the phenomena in the sublunary world, is in accordance with logical inference: here we know the causal relation between one phenomenon and another; we see how far science can investigate them, and the management of nature is clear and intelligible. But of the things in the heavens man knows nothing except a few mathematical calculations, and you see how far these go. I say in the words of the poet, "The heavens are the Lord's, but the earth He hath given to the sons of man" (Ps. cxv. 16); that is to say, God alone has a perfect and true knowledge of the heavens, their nature, their essence, their form, their motions, and their causes; but He gave man power to know the things which are under the heavens: here is man's world, here is his home, into which he has been placed, and of which he is himself a portion. This is in reality the truth.”

The difference is that we have expanded what we consider the physical universe. Rambam believed the heavens were in a different realm where the laws of physics as we know them did not apply. The heavens were on the threshold between the physical and the metaphysical. We have moved them firmly into the physical. However the metaphysical issues remain, as Rambam continues:

“For the facts which we require in proving the existence of heavenly beings are withheld from us: the heavens are too far from us, and too exalted in place and rank. Man's faculties are too deficient to comprehend even the general proof the heavens contain for the existence of Him who sets them in motion. It is in fact ignorance or a kind of madness to weary our minds with finding out things which are beyond our reach, without having the means of approaching them. We must content ourselves with that which is within our reach, and that which cannot be approached by logical inference let us leave to him who has been endowed with that great and divine influence, expressed in the words: "Mouth to mouth do I speak with Him" (Num. xii. 8).”

This brings me to the subject of my previous post. Revelation has a place where our own rational intellect cannot go. It is after being properly grounded in the sciences, having understood the limitations of science, the areas that cannot be understood by analysis or inference, that revelation comes along and fills the gap. When we say that we can find everything in the Torah it is when we place scientific knowledge squarely within it and see the revelatory part as the ontological argument that complements where we cannot go alone. Revelation alone without intellectual perfection leads to idolatry and destruction.

The Dangers of a Revelatory Experience - The Egel Hazahav - The Golden Calf-

I just relearned a beautiful Meshech Chochma by R. Meir Simcha of Dvinsk on this week’s Parsha which shows us how to interpret what seems to be an innocuous saying of the Rabbis. In its superficial reading it sounds like a myth. Properly understood it teaches an incredibly deep philosophical idea.

I want to caution that R. Meir Simcha himself, when he addresses these deep philosophical ideas writes in a quite obfuscating way. It requires interpretation and what follows is my understanding of what he wrote. There is no guarantee that it is the only reading.

Rav Hisda said the writing of the Luchot could be read from the inside and from the outside e.g.

The first thing that catches one’s attention is that the words that R. Hisda uses as examples do not appear in the Luchot. Rashi notes that and comments that the choice of words is unintentional and meant to convey only examples of how a reading from two sides would appear. But even more baffling is what is R. Hisda telling us? What significance does this curiosity have?

R. Meir Simcha explains that there are two approaches to finding and understanding God. The regular approach which was followed by Avraham is to contemplate the universe and in analyzing cause and effect arrive at the conclusion that there is a First Cause that causes everything without Himself being caused. The laws of morality and ethics can also be learned from nature, what is commonly referred to as natural law and morality. It is a searching process from the bottom up. We look at our existence and surroundings to find God and establish laws.

The other approach is the revelatory experience similar to the one the Jewish people experienced at Sinai. They experienced God through revelation and received laws from God. The difference between the two is that when it occurs through revelation it becomes clear that God has Will, having willed existence just like He willed this revelatory experience. Apprehending God as having Will and choice makes one imagine tools that He uses to create and maintain what He created. Those are the ideas behind creation, the laws of nature set in place by God, the separate intellects or what we refer to as angels. They all are separate entities put in place by God to make things happen.

On the other hand finding the First Cause from the bottom up does not necessarily prove that God has choice. He can be seen as Aristotle saw Him, a spiritual power behind physicality. The spiritual and physical are interdependent and both are there eternally without any choice. Spinoza developed a completely atheistic philosophy on that basis. It is through revelation that we conclude that God, the First Cause, created in time and chose to will everything. Revelation is an adjunct and not the sole basis for an understanding of existence and God. When one arrives at God through this combination of intellectual development and revelation, it is illogical to confuse the First Cause with the laws of nature which are its effects.

It is therefore the miraculous revelatory experience, without a rigorous understanding of First Cause as a logical necessity, which allows for a misunderstanding of where everything begins.

R. Hisda refers to these two approaches to God using the metaphor of reading from the inside and from the outside or from the bottom up and the top down. Some, like Moshe and those close to him, experienced revelation as an addition to their bottom up understanding. Others, the Jewish people, the masses having just been liberated from Egyptian slavery, having been immersed in an idolatrous society that knew many gods and who saw the forces of nature as gods were not ready to grasp a transcendental unique God. Having experienced God through revelation only, without the proper philosophical grounding, they could not distinguish between the separate intellects, the angels that they perceived as the forces that guide existence and their Creator. They confused the Creator with His creations and that was the cause of their mistake in demanding an idol to replace Moshe. God cannot be represented because He is outside nature; He is a singularity, the only Entity that is not caused. It is when one confuses God with nature, when He is no longer seen as transcendental, that there is a need to represent that idea with a symbol. The golden calf was a representation of this mistaken concept. It was thus the experience of apprehending the existence of angels, separate intellects in medieval philosophic parlance, through revelation and the accompanying misconceptions that was at the root of the Egel.

Where do we find in the Torah an allusion to the revelation of separate intellects? Where does it mention anything about the people “seeing” angels which led to their misconception? R. Hisda tells us that if we read carefully the verse in Shemot 27:8 describing the construction of the Altar, we will find a clear allusion to that experience.

ח נְבוּב לֻחֹת, תַּעֲשֶׂה אֹתוֹ: כַּאֲשֶׁר הֶרְאָה אֹתְךָ בָּהָר, כֵּן יַעֲשׂוּ. {ס}
8 Hollow with planks shall thou make it; as he has shown you in the mount, so shall they make it. {S}

What is intriguing is that whereas in Shemot 26:30[1] and 25:40[2], in the discussion of the Mishkan and the menorah respectively, the reference is unspecific, here it is very specific; “as he has shown you in the mount”. “He” being their perception of a specific entity that showed them the altar. Just as angels represent the concept of laws of nature so do they represent the concept behind the construction of the altar. Clearly the Torah is alluding that the people “saw” angels at Sinai. There was a revelatory experience that let them “see” the significance of the construction of the Mizbeach just as they “saw” the general concepts underlying God’s world

Note how two out of the three words R. Hisda used as examples for his metaphor appear in this verse – נְבוּב and בָּהָר. The third word סָרוּ appears in Shemot 32:8

8 they have turned aside quickly out of the way which I commanded them; they have made them a molten calf, and have worshipped it, and have sacrificed unto it, and said: This is thy god, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.'

In other words R. Hisda was telling us that the cause for the people’s mistake in making the Egel was their apprehending through revelation, philosophical and metaphysical concepts of God and the laws of nature that make up our existence, without proper grounding in philosophy. The mistake came about because they could not differentiate God the Creator from His creations which they so vividly “saw”.

I believe this to be an exemplary interpretation of what is referred to as Aggadah and shows how much thought went into a superficially simplistic statement. The literal minded reader will not be harmed and understand it as he is wont to; literally. He will be filled with wonderment about the miraculous tablets that were found with words carved into them from side to side. Presenting that reader with the concept of separate intellects, laws of nature, God’s will and methods of contemplation would have no meaning to him. R. Meir Simcha or other scholars of his caliber, on the other hand, would be able to decipher the message and share it with those who can see the truth behind it.

In the posts below I showed how Rambam interprets other verses and comments of Chazal in a similar vein.

Clearly R. Meir Simcha had Rambam in front of his eyes when he wrote this piece.

The Absolute Truth

I just read an excellent article in the latest Commentary by R. Meir Soloveitchik titled Of (Religious) Fences and Neighbors. An abstract of the article can be seen at
http://www.commentarymagazine.com/cm/main/viewArticle.aip?id=10851 .

The article reviews a book by Maria Johnson Strangers and Neighbors: What I Have Learned About Christianity by Living Among Orthodox Jews which can be purchased at

http://www.amazon.com/Strangers-Neighbors-Learned-Christianity-Orthodox/dp/0849911516/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/102-5063159-5948948?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1173261779&sr=8-1

RMS contrasts the point of view of Rabbis Heschel, Greenberg and Hartman on pluralism with the view of the author and R. Joseph B. Soloveitchik in Confrontation. While Rabbis HGH, each using a different slant, argue for the acceptance of other religions as true, allowing for more than one truth, Ms. Johnson, a staunch catholic who befriended and lives closely with practicing Orthodox Jews, argues for agreeing to disagree on theology while accepting and even admiring those who have different beliefs. She understands and admires the love Jews have for Halacha, she even understands our obsession with details as a demonstration of that love. Although having great respect and acceptance she remains secure in her belief that her religion is the truth while acknowledging that her Jewish friends feel the same about theirs. Here is a quote by RMS from the book:

Johnson is quite matter of fact in acknowledging that her Jewish neighbors regard her as mistaken in her beliefs. Trying to guess what they tell their children about her and her Catholic family, she muses:

I’d imagine they say what I’d say to my [own] children if the nice family down the block were Mormons. I’d say, “They are great kids, and I’m really glad you’re friends. You’ve probably noticed that they go to a funny church and they have some odd ideas about God. If they tell you stories about an angel called Moroni or somebody called Joseph Smith and some tablets, you can just tell them that we’re Catholic and we don’t believe in that. Don’t argue with them; it’s really important to them, and we don’t want to hurt their feelings, but just between us, it’s pretty silly.”

There have been many discussions lately about Rambam’s Ikarim whether they are valid, stand up to scrutiny and even whether they have a place in Judaism, a religion based on actions and not on dogma. The utility of dogma in a closed society, where contact with the outside world is restricted, may be questionable. One may argue that devotion to Halacha suffices and accepting the existence of God as Creator is enough. Saying Shema twice daily and davening three times daily is all the theology needed for one to be a Frum Jew. Although most individuals who belong to such a group would not acquire any higher theological understanding, they would no different then the majority of any religious group. In each there are only individuals who aspire to a higher understanding of their existential state. It is however the modern Jew who does interact with society either because of his profession, his lifestyle or his personal preference that the need for the Ikarim, the dogma, is indispensable. The Jew, who confronts daily other points of view and is expected to deal with them, needs to have a clear understanding that, although he is respectful of other opinions, his is the truth. He also needs to know what his truth is. The Ikarim provide us with a summary of our truth.

There is only one truth and eventually all the other nations will recognize that. The fact that they think that their truth is absolute is based on mistaken theology. As human beings we can accept that they do not agree with us as long as they don’t try to force us to accept their theology. There is no possibility of a dialogue because the religious experience is personal and cannot be shared. As the Rav wrote that it is “both impertinent and unwise for an outsider to intrude upon… the way in which a faith community expresses its relationship to God”. Rambam so eloquently expressed our position in Hilchot Melachim 11:4

When the king Moshiach will truly arrive, and succeed, they [the nations] will all realize that their ancestors endowed them with falsehoods and that their prophets and parents misled them.

The Historical and Personal aspects of Providence -

Rambam in MN 3:22 and 23 discusses Sefer Iyov. I found this discussion as one of the most difficult to understand especially chapter 23. Here is what I have so far clarified – I think. Any help will be much appreciated.

Sefer Iyov consists of a discussion between Iyov and four of his friends about theodicy. Rambam starts the discussion by pointing out that all five friends started with certain common understandings.

  • God knows what is happening to Iyov.
  • God caused his suffering
  • God is not unjust nor can He be accused of wrongdoing.

Iyov describes his suffering in spite of him being a righteous man. His friends try to console him, bring him hope, admonish him to be patient, control his speech and submit to god’s will. Iyov on the other hand bemoans his fate saying that he cannot restrain himself when faced with his great misfortune. His friends try to find reasons arguing that God is just and each one finds a different argument how to justify that. Each one proposes another theory which Rambam matches with each theory on providence that he listed in MN 3:17.

  • Iyov proposed Aristotles position that God is uninvolved in the running of the world. He is the First Cause but has no volition and therefore is irrelevant in its running.
  • Elifaz argued that we cannot judge what is right or wrong. Just because man behaves a certain way, thinking he is doing the right thing, does not insure that it is so. One has to always be introspective and verify that our actions are truly good. Rambam says that this is a position that is very close to the Torah’s view.
  • Bildad argued that one suffers in this world so that he is rewarded in the world to come.
  • Tzofer argued that God acts according to His volition. We cannot fathom His reasons and all we can do is submit.
  • Elihu’s position which Rambam says is the one Iyov accepted at the end and conforms to his own, I will discuss at length a little further on.

When we look at our actions and their consequences there are different perspectives that we have to keep in mind. In our day-to day life we expect that each action will have a consequence. In our interaction with others we can often predict the outcome. If we put ourselves in the other person’s shoes we can act in such a way that we will elicit a response that we expect. In our personal life, generally if we for example eat healthy, exercise and take good care of our body, we will be generally in good health and avoid sicknesses. If we work hard on something we generally do well and succeed. In other words there is a reward and punishment system in place. We can ascribe it to God as the Creator and all knowing or explain it away as a natural sequence of cause and effect.

It is when we do all the right things, we act according to the best of our abilities and still things go wrong that we are perplexed. How do we explain that? How can that be something God did or wanted? That is when we find ourselves tending towards taking God out of the equation and accept Aristotle’s argument; God has nothing to do with any of this, it is all pure chance and random. We do our best and cause and effect works generally but not always. When it does not it is pure chance and randomness. Iyov deals with this question and his first reaction is to accept Aristotle’s position. The arguments presented by his friends other than Elihu do not solve his dilemma. He finds fault with each of them.

The way I understand Rambam, he proposes two separate but complementary views which I would call the historical and the personal. The historical is the one I discussed in earlier posts where a person acts in ways that he believes have a lasting impact even as far as future generations. The model for such behavior is Moshe and the Patriarchs who set themselves a goal of creating a nation of servants of God. The personal reverses and struggle are much more acceptable if in the end the stated goal is achieved. The problem is of course the uncertainty that pervades the person that is acting. Prophecy in the sense of intense contemplation of God’s universe and man’s place in it help in reducing that doubt. This is how I understand Rambam’s words in MN 3:23

“His (Elihu’s) description of the method of prophecy in preceding verses is likewise new. He says: "Surely God speaks in one way, yea in two ways, yet man perceives it not. In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls upon man, in slumbering upon the bed" (ibid. 14, 15). He afterwards supports and illustrates his theory by a description of many natural phenomena, such as thunder, lightning, rain, and winds; with these are mixed up accounts of various incidents of life, e.g., an account of pestilence contained in the following passage: "In a moment they die, and at midnight; the people become tumultuous and pass away" (xxxiv. 20). Great wars are described in the following verse: "He breaks in pieces mighty men without number, and sets others in their stead" (ibid. 24).There are many more passages of this kind. In a similar manner the Revelation that reached Job (chap. xxxviii, chap. xli.), and explained to him the error of his whole belief, constantly describes natural objects, and nothing else; it describes the elements, meteorological phenomena, and peculiarities of various kinds of living beings. The sky, the heavens, Orion and Pleiades are only mentioned in reference to their influence upon our atmosphere, so that Job's attention is in this prophecy only called to things below the lunar sphere. Elihu likewise derives instruction from the nature of various kinds of animals. Thus he says: "He teaches us through the beasts of the earth, and makes us wise through the fowls of heaven" (xxxv. 11).”

This intense contemplation of God’s universe coupled with man’s strong intellectual capacity of which prophecy is the paradigm, helps mitigate some of the difficulties facing people. However ultimately,

“The description of all these things serves to impress on our minds that we are unable to comprehend how these transient creatures come into existence, or to imagine how their natural properties commenced to exist, and that these are not like the things which we are able to produce. Much less can we compare the manner in which God rules and manages His creatures with the manner in which we rule and manage certain beings. We must content ourselves with this, and believe that nothing is hidden from God ...”

There is a clear limit to how far this thinking can take us. We have a very micro view of what the effects of our actions will be. We can only see the results during our lifetime and even that is not really clear. What appears as a setback may in the end be an achievement or vice versa. We are left with faith that in doing what we understand to be the right thing will bring fruits eventually and that we are acting in a way that is compatible with God’s ways.

This is where the personal side of providence comes into play. In this process of contemplating the universe man gets an insight about God, the First Cause. He struggles to understand as much as he can about Him knowing that he will never really get to know Him, for He is unknowable. It is this search for the ultimate knowledge that is the core of a human being. It is this ability for abstract thought developed and used to its utmost capacity that makes us humans qua humans. A person who arrives at this level of understanding changes his perspective of what is important. His physical existence no longer is the most important thing. It is his intellectual world that takes on primacy.

“When we know this we shall find everything that may befall us easy to bear; mishap will create no doubts in our hearts concerning God, whether He knows our affairs or not, whether He provides for us or abandons us. On the contrary, our fate will increase our love of God; as is said in the end of this prophecy: "Therefore I abhor myself and repent concerning the dust and ashes" (xlii. 6); and as our Sages say: "The pious do everything out of love, and rejoice in their own afflictions." (B. T. Shabb. 88b.)”

On a personal note: Although intellectually I can hear this argument for Providence and the justification for what I perceive as injustices and how to deal with them, I cannot emotionally absorb it. I guess that philosophizing is not enough and one must experience it to really understand it. It is not enough to talk theology, one must live it.

In MN 3:51 Rambam discusses this further. I will address that in a future post.

R. Mordechai Breuer A"H on Megillah and Zachor.

Although a day late, it is still Purim in Yerushalaim, so here is a classic; An article By Harav Mordechai Breuer A”H who was just Niftar. It was published in Megadim about a year ago. (Thanks to Eng. Yaakov Lowinger of Bnei Brak who circulated it).

The Voice and God talking to Himself.

18 These words the LORD spoke unto all your assembly in the mount out of the midst of the fire, of the cloud, and of the thick darkness, with a great voice, and it went on no more. And He wrote them upon two tables of stone, and gave them unto me.
19 And it came to pass, when ye heard the voice out of the midst of the darkness, while the mountain did burn with fire, that ye came near unto me, even all the heads of your tribes, and your elders;
20 and ye said: 'Behold, the LORD our God hath shown us His glory and His greatness, and we have heard His voice out of the midst of the fire; we have seen this day that God doth speak with man, and he lives.

(Devarim 5:18-20)

The Torah repeatedly and consistently uses the word Kol – Voice to describe the prophecy experienced by Moshe and the Jewish people at Sinai. Not only at Sinai but at every time Moshe received a prophecy associated with laws, it is referred to as Kol – voice.

פט וּבְבֹא מֹשֶׁה אֶל-אֹהֶל מוֹעֵד, לְדַבֵּר אִתּוֹ, וַיִּשְׁמַע אֶת-הַקּוֹל מִדַּבֵּר אֵלָיו מֵעַל הַכַּפֹּרֶת אֲשֶׁר עַל-אֲרֹן הָעֵדֻת, מִבֵּין שְׁנֵי הַכְּרֻבִים; וַיְדַבֵּר, אֵלָיו. {פ}
89 And when Moses went into the tent of meeting that He might speak with him, then he heard the Voice speaking unto him from above the ark-cover that was upon the ark of the testimony, from between the two cherubim; and He spoke unto him. {P}
(Bamidbar 7:89)
Reading the verse carefully we can glean some interesting details. The initiative was Moshe’s he came to the Ohel Moed and heard the Voice talking to itself. Rashi points that out based on the Mesora which reads Midaber rather then Medaber and Onkelos who translates Mitmalel. In other words whenever Moshe wanted to understand a new law, a mitzvah, he concentrated and “heard” the constant Kol – “Voice” that is there[1]. Another detail is that the Voice emanated from between the Keruvim. Rambam in MN 2:6 tells us that Keruv is the rational faculty of man. In Hil Yesodei Hatorah 2:8 Rambam lists the different types of angels. “Angel” is the name we give to what we perceive as the different concepts that are behind existence (see my posts with the label Angels). The less a human can grasp the angel/concept; the higher is the level we ascribe to it. Ishim is the concept that prophets apprehend. Keruvim are one level above them and that is what Moshe’s rational faculty, the other Keruv, was able to grasp. Thus the prophecy that the Torah refers to as Kol – Voice emanated from the interplay of the two Keruvim. We can say that Moshe’s prophecy resulted from his rational faculty being able to grasp a transcendental concept of God that others could not and that allowed him to legislate immutable laws.

This idea of the prophecy being out there and Moshe hearing it is repeated in this week’s Parsha.
יא וְדִבֶּר יְהוָה אֶל-מֹשֶׁה פָּנִים אֶל-פָּנִים, כַּאֲשֶׁר יְדַבֵּר אִישׁ אֶל-רֵעֵהוּ; וְשָׁב, אֶל-הַמַּחֲנֶה, וּמְשָׁרְתוֹ יְהוֹשֻׁעַ בִּן-נוּן נַעַר, לֹא יָמִישׁ מִתּוֹךְ הָאֹהֶל. {פ}
11 And the LORD spoke unto Moses face to face, as a man speaks unto his friend. And he would return into the camp; but his minister Joshua, the son of Nun, a young man, departed not out of the Tent. {P}
(Shemot 33:11 see also Passuk 9)
Here again Rashi notes, based on Onkelos, that it reads Vediber which is translated in a passive way. God spoke and Moshe heard. What is interesting though is that this type of conversation is deemed as face-to-face just like a friend speaking to another. The speaker is God while Moshe the listener faces Him and hears Him directly without any intermediary. The metaphor means that Moshe’s other faculty, the imaginative, did not play a role in his prophecy. When Moshe apprehended the laws that he was to transmit to the Jews he did not have to interpret the prophecy. It came to him in the same form he transmitted it. That experience is referred to as Kol. Not only Moshe experienced this; so did the Jews. They “heard” the Voice saying “Moshe, Moshe go tell them so and so” (Hilchot Yesodei Hatorah 8:1). That is the meaning of
4 The LORD spoke with you face to face in the mount out of the midst of the fire--
(Devarim 5:4)
The people experienced a face-to-face type of prophecy just as Moshe did. In other words they also experienced the Voice, a perception that was so vivid that it bypassed the imaginative faculty. Of course they only perceived that Moshe was told to transmit the Mitzvot to them while he understood the mitzvah itself. It was however enough to validate Moshe and authenticate his prophecy.

This verse also describes another detail of the experience; the Voice emanated from fire. However in Devarim 5:20 we read
19 And it came to pass, when ye heard the voice out of the midst of the darkness,
Which was it fire or darkness? See my post http://yediah.blogspot.com/2006/08/fire-and-darkness.html where I explained how the two are really the same. Fire and darkness are metaphors for our inability to apprehend anything about God’s essence. Although the Voice was “heard” it did not give a clue about its source. The people understood that there is an Entity responsible for the Voice but nothing about its essence.

“Another meaning of the word (Panim) is "the presence and existence of a person…
In the same sense the word is used in the following passage, "And the Lord spoke unto Moses face to face," i.e., both being present, without any intervening medium between them…and also "The Lord talked with you face to face" (Deut. v. 4); instead of which we read more plainly in another place, "Ye heard the voice of the words, but saw no similitude: only ye heard a voice" (ib. iv. 12). The hearing of the voice without seeing any similitude is termed "face to face." Similarly do the words, "And the Lord spoke unto Moses face to face" correspond to "There he heard the voice of one speaking unto him" (Num. vii. 89), in the description of God's speaking to Moses. Thus it will be clear to you that the perception of the Divine voice without the intervention of an angel is expressed by "face to face." In the same sense the word panim must be understood in "And my face (Panay) shall not be seen" (Exod. xxxiii. 23); i.e., my true existence, as it is, cannot be comprehended.” (MN 1:37)
